Born and raised in Marlinton, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, B.J. graduated from Pocahontas County High School, studied music education at West Virginia University and worked for fifteen years promoting Appalachian musical heritage throughout West Virginia.   She was the first full-time Development Director for WVMR Community Radio in Dunmore, WV, where she later served as Station Manager.  This small radio station is manned by trained volunteers and is the only community station on the AM dial due its location in the National Radio Astronomy Observatory quiet zone.

Gudmundsson is Director of the Oral History Media Project for the Pocahontas County Free Libraries who received the 2003 IMLS National Award for Museum and Library Services.  She has partnered with the library in developing access to new technology and creating media and film projects to create a visual library.  As a volunteer she provides technical training to students and community members who collect and archive video histories and life stories.
