WORLD PREMIERE – “An Evening with Cal Price” 7:00 PM
B.J. Gudmundsson will present the first part of her second feature
documentary, “”30 – Cal Price and The Pocahontas Times”, made in
Pocahontas County. It is a one-hour documentary of the play she wrote
about Cal Price. She will also show “Out of the Storm”, a landmark
film about an unknown event linking the state to the people of New
England. This new film is about one of America’s most interesting
small newspapers, the Pocahontas County Times, and its famous editor,
Cal Price, who was a national leader in the environmental movement. October 12 – Saturday 1 & 3 PM
The Night of the Hunter ELK THEATER 7: 00 PM
Daniel Boyd, WV’s leading feature film director, will present his
second film, “Strangest Dreams – Invasion of the Space Preachers.”
There will be a party before the film with music provided by WV’s
leading blues band, The Carpenter Ants. Leader guitarist Michael Lipton
did the music for the film. October 13 – Sunday 1 & 3 PM

Evans, a native of Bull Town, Braxton County, will present clips from
her new $1.7 million four-part history of Appalachia, The Appalachians.
Ms. Evans is an award-winning filmmaker who has finally come home to
make an endearing portrait of her native Appalachia. The series will be
shown nationally on PBS in early 2003. 7:00 PM
Mark Samels, senior producer for PBS’s showcase series, “The
American Experience”, will be present to discuss his film on WV native
son, John Nash – “A Brilliant Madness.” Mr. Samels worked in WV
for many years, even working on “Invasion of the Space Preachers.”
He directed many films at WV Public Broadcast, including “West
Virginia”(1995), the $1.5 million dollar history of the state. Since
then he has worked in Pa. and Boston, producing many of the finest long
documentaries made. He will talk about working with Nash, Sylvia Nassar,
and the author of the biography on Nash, “A Beautiful Mind,” and
many other topics. He directed one of the “Different Drummer” films
that he still considers one of the finest series ever produced by WV
Public TV. Before
Mr. Samels, Bonita Rapham’s Sundance-screened film, “2+2”, will be
shown. It is an 11-minute experimental film about John Nash, using
fantastic visuals and information on schizophrenia to reveal the amazing
world Nash created in his own mind.
